Former Crystal Palace owner, Simon Jordan, has slammed Tottenham Hotspur manager, Antonio Conte over his ‘magician’ comments following Spurs’ Europa League 2-1 defeat to Mura on Thursday.
Conte suffered his first defeat as Tottenham manager, after they lost 2-1 to Mura in Thursday’s away Europa League tie.
Two goals from Tomi Horvat and Amadej Marosa gave the Slovenian side the victory against Tottenham as Harry Kane’s goal was not enough.
Speaking at his post-match press conference after the game, Conte insisted he is not a “magician”, adding that he is starting to understand the situation at Tottenham.
He said,
“After three weeks, I am starting to understand the situation. It is not simple. “At this moment, the level at Tottenham is not so high.
“Someone (might) think that a new coach arrives and Conte won in the past and then I am a magician. But the only magic I can do is to work.”
However, Jordan has now hit out at Conte, insisting that the former Chelsea and Inter Milan manager does not need to be a “magician” to beat Mura.
“If you are Daniel Levy, you would know what you have signed as a manager. If you did not, then you should not have taken him on board,” Jordan told talkSPORT on Friday.
“Because I don’t assume Antonio Conte was a shrinking violet in the negotiations about what he wanted from Tottenham.
“From how much he gets paid, who he brings with him to what he expects the support mechanism to look like.
“Whatever you say about not being a magician, please don’t tell me that squad isn’t good enough to beat that side yesterday.
“He can’t say anything can he? What can he say? That performance yesterday was turgid and poor and at its worst against rank amateur opposition.
“But it’s not something that Tottenham haven’t thrown out before. I understand it because he has to protect himself, he will be being brought forward as the cure for all ails.
“He wants to manage that expectation because if he doesn’t manage that expectation, he’s going to be in the firing line quicker than a quick thing from quickland.
“Because people are going to say ‘hold on, you’re supposed to fix things’.
“Tottenham’s squad is good enough to overcome the opposition they played yesterday, so everybody’s in the mix for that performance yesterday, including the manager.”
